We can't ALL look good

The main things that I aim to keep under control on a daily basis are: the twins, my job, the house and myself (last on the list, of course). One thing I’m only starting to accept now, after almost 4 years, is that those four things need to take turns to look good. We can’t all be 100% every minute, every day.

If I’m up to date with work, the house looks spotless and neither of the twins are sick, you can be sure I’m probably rocking a homeless-hit-by-a-truck kind of look. If Friday comes along and I’m looking put together, the twins’ weekly routine has gone smoothly and all the rooms in my house are tidy, I’m definitely going to be spending some time in the office during the weekend. If I’ve had a good week in work and my hair looks clean, you can bet the twin’s laundry basket is screaming out for help AND there’s at least one room in my house with the door closed where all the untidiness has been hidden away. There’s also a chance the twins skipped one shower that week.

On very rare occasions have all those four things looked put together at the same time, and when they have, it’s probably been during times when my parents have been visiting.

I haven't even mentioned my car, it's not part of the list at all. I only got a minute to finally connect it to my phone through Bluetooth a few weeks ago, 9.5 months after I bought it. My car hasn’t been clean more than a handful of times the past 3 years, when my brother or mum have taken the keys and done the dirty work. Even then, it only lasts like that for 24 hours. Most days, that vehicle hosts so many random items that I reckon we could easily live in it for a couple of days if it ever ran out of battery and we were stranded in the middle of nowhere.

Shoes, snacks, blankets, spare clothes, towels, odd socks and half-drunk water bottles cohabit in my car on a daily basis. There’s also so many crumbs, leaves and sticks you could easily think a family of squirrels have invaded it and we share ownership of it. My car takes care of us more than I take care of it.

Who knows, maybe one day the planets will align and we will all look neat and tidy for 2 days in a row. But until then, we will continue taking turns because, as we say to the little ones, sharing is caring.
